Almost a week had passed since they had stood over the stream of Niamh, gazing at the sparkling green waters of old. Duna had agreed to help the Prince in the search for the secret to his father’s seemingly eternal life. The obvious place to start had been at the Grande Nissian Library, which had been installed in the White Palace since the day that the monumental structure had been built all those millennia ago. Much to Duna’s disappointment, however, not much had been discovered in it’s ancient tomes. Madir had left Duna to the task of scouring over the many books, him not being much of a history enthusiast himself.

Today had been no different. Duna had found herself, once again, alone in the impressive library while the Prince went off to his royal duties. She had already searched a large portion of the History section of the place, including books about foreign kingdoms, hoping that someone might have overlooked such an obvious source of information.

Aside from learning about the genealogy of the Royal Houses of the Three Kingdoms, it had been a complete waste of time. The only positive thing that had come out of her week long search had been written confirmation of the unnaturally long life of two hundred years that Madir’s ancestors had indeed led.

Searching the shelves of the library, Duna found herself wandering off to a secluded section that appeared to not have been used for quite some time. A thick layer of dust coated the vast selection of leather bound volumes. Some of the racks were covered in tangled three-dimensional cobwebs, almost obliterating the valuable ancient tomes. Clearing off some of the spider webs, she carefully read over the many titles adorning the stacks. There seemed to be no specific order to them, as if the books had been randomly placed on the shelf.

Finally deciding on a heavy, intricately decorated volume, she took it off the sill and inspected her selection. The book was embellished by numerous delicate, silver lines and swivels that seemed to form the words of a language that Duna didn’t recognize. Cracking it open, she noticed the same cursive writing on the pages lining the inside. As she flipped through the tome, tables with numbers and dates appeared, taking over the text. It seemed as if it was some sort of a reference book for old accounting records.

Placing it back on the shelf, she examined the rest of the selection. A thin, purple, cloth bound novel caught Duna’s eye. Taking it down and turning it over, she realized that the book had no title on it. The covering was, indeed, made from some sort of light cloth, however what surprised Duna the most was in how pristine of a condition the book appeared to be in after all this time under the heavy layer of dust and termites. How very strange.

She was even more startled when she opened the small volume and realized that it had been written in the Common Language of the Continent, which meant that she could actually read it.
